Pepperdine grad Wedel wins again

Fred Wedel is on quite a run since graduating from Pepperdine.

One week after winning the Texas Amateur, Wedel overcame bogeys on the last two holes to shoot 2-under-par 67 and win the 55th Northeast Amateur by one stroke over Sean Crocker of Westlake Village and Patrick Martin of Birmingham, Ala., at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I.

“Winning is really hard, that is the most simple way I can put it,” said Wedel, whose only college victory came in the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational as a junior. “After I birdied No. 15, I was feeling comfortable, especially after I pared 16. … It was difficult for me to handle my emotions. It’s hard for you not to get ahead of yourself when you’re just a few shots away from winning an event like this.

” … It just shows how much better I have gotten in the last year, it is something to be proud of. It is just a process and it is my biggest win by far. I am absolutely thrilled.”

Wedel, who lives in Malibu, finished at 68-69-66-67–270, 5-under, while Crocker, a junior at USC, totaled 69-67-65-70–271 to tie Martin, who totaled 68-66-68-69–271.

Crocker missed a four-foot par putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff.

Corey Pereira of Cameron Park and the University of Washington shot 66-67-67-72–272 to tie for fourth at Scottie Scheffler of Dallas, who wound up at 67-67-72-66-272, and Brian Carlson of Madison, Conn., who came in at 69-67-67-69–272.

Gordon Neale of Trabuco Canyon, a sophomore at Florida, tied for seventh at 71-70-68-64–273, while Jonah Texeira, a USC junior from Porter Ranch, tied for 27th at 70-67-72-68–277, and Jacob Solomon, an Auburn sophomore from Dublin, tied for 38th at 70-68-70-72–280.
