Borrelli Beats Guo, 3 and 2, to Win 55th California Women’s Amateur

Annika Borrelli of Alamo claimed her second big title in July.

Borrelli, a 21-year-old senior-to-be at the University of San Francisco, captured the 55th California Women’s Amateur Championship with a 3-and-2 match play victory over Sophie Guo of Orlando, Fla., at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights.

Earlier in the month, Borrelli won the 2021 Northern California Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship.

Guo, a sophomore at Texas, took a 2-up lead after four holes, but Borrelli pulled even with a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-5 fifth and followed that up with an improbable up-and-down for par on the par-3 sixth to even the match.

Borrelli took command by winning three holes through No. 11, the last two with birdies, but Guo fought back by winning the 13th with a birdie before Borrelli pushed the lead back to 3-up with a 40-foot birdie putt at No. 15 to go dormie.

Then Borrelli, the 2019 NCGA Player of the Year, two-putted for a par one hole later to wrap up the title.

In the semifinals, Borrelli downed Kelly Yu of Claremont and Guo got past Camille Boyd of Yorba Linda with a birdie on the second playoff hole.

Former winners of the California Women’s Amateur Championship include Juli Inkster, Amy Alcott, Patty Sheehan, Shelley Hamlin, Natalie Gulbis, Mina Harigae, Angel Yin, Pat Cornett, Emilee Klein, Amy Fruwirth, Amari Avery, Andrea Gaston, Caroline Keggi, Terri Melanson, Dorothy Delasin, Corey Weworski, Lynn Cowan, Marianne Towersey and Jennifer Johnson. For complete results, visit https://calam-55thcaliforniawomensamateurchampio.golfgenius.com/pages/6964230521668784989
