Vanier wins Commuters Super Senior title

Gary Vanier has been a winner since his days at Skyline High in Oakland and as an All-American at Stanford.

The 67-year-old Vanier, who lives in Pleasant Hill, added another title to his incredible resume by making a birdie on the third playoff hole to turn back Jim Knoll of Sunnyvale and win the inaugural Alameda Commuters Super Senior Division on the North Course at Chuck Corica Golf Complex in Alameda.

Vanier (pictured right), a member at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, won his seventh Alameda Commuters title over three divisions, posting a score of 69-68—137, 5-under-par, while Knoll (left), a four-time Commuters champion, finished at 70-67—137.

Vanier, the 1982 California Amateur champion, also has won 11 Northern California Golf Association titles, six San Francisco City Championships, two California Golf Association titles and the 2015 Southern California Amateur, plus numerous other events.

Jeff Burda of Modesto was third at 69-72—142, followed by Frank Pieper of Carmel at 74-72—146, while Dan Bieber of Alamo shot 73-74—147 to tie for fifth with Bob Olds of Antioch, who finished at 71-76—147.

Charles Richesin of Stockton totaled 73-75—148 to tie for seventh with Mark Miller of Antioch, who wound up at 69-79—148, while Mike Parnow of Sonoma was ninth at 76-73—149, and Bob Thomason of Stockton and Ron Johnson of Walnut Creek tied for 10th at 75-75—150.
