Justin Suh of San Jose pulled away late in the final round to claim a six-stroke victory over Sebastian Crampton of Pacific Grove in the 57th Northeast Amateur Invitational at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I.
Suh, a senior USC who is fourth in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com Rankings after winning five times for the Trojans last season, birdied five of the last seven holes and carded a score of 63-65-67-66—261, 15-under-par, to tie the tournament record set by Peter Uihlein in 2011.
“I had no idea; that’s just an extra bonus,” Suh said of the record. “It feels unbelievable.
This is always known as such a big event, one of the best. To get to win my first time out here, it means a lot. I wish I had played here sooner. It’s such a great event.
“It was tough (early in the final round) because the wind changed from what it’s been all week. It was just a good week besides. It seemed pretty flawless, especially on the back side.”
Crampton, a senior at Cal, finished at 69-66-66-66—267, and Will Gordon of Davidson, N.C., and Vanderbilt was third at 66-64-69-71—270.
Luis Gagne of Orlando, Fla., and LSU, who share low-amateur honors a week earlier at the U.S. Open, shot 69-65-69-68—271 to tie for fourth with Davis Shore of Knoxville, Tenn., and Alabama, who wound up at 69-68-67-67—271.
Joshua McCarthy of Danville totaled 67-68-63-74—272 to tie for sixth with Austin Squires of Union, Ky. (63-70-66-73—272), Andrew Paysse of Temple, Texas (67-69-67-69—272), Jacob Bergeron of Slidell, La. (65-66-72-69—272), and John Augenstein of Owensboro, Ky. (71-68-68-65—272.
Defending champion Collin Morikawa of La Canada Flintridge and Cal tied for 21st at 67-69-72-69—277.
Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach earned the Joseph Sprague Award given to the low mid-amateur by finishing 14th at 73-67-65-70—275.
