The Match IV Preview and Awesome Prop Bets:
Team Mickelson and Brady
Mickelson surprised everyone by winning the PGA Championship late in May. “Phil the Thrill” hadn’t won a major since 2013, but he became the oldest player to win a major at Kiawah Island off the coast of South Carolina. He was just a few weeks shy of is 51st birthday when he won his sixth major.
Mickelson’s win wasn’t only shocking because of his age. Lefty had not earned a top-20 finish in any of his previous 14 tournaments this season. That win is increasingly looking like an aberration, too, as he has not looked sharp in his three events since the major. He missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge the very next week, and he failed to break into the top 60 at the U.S. Open and the Travelers Championship over the last few weeks.
Although Lefty is in his 50s, he can still bring the wood. Mickelson ranks in the top 50 in driving distance on the PGA Tour at 302.6 yards. However, his accuracy has been an issue this season as he ranks among the worst golfers on the PGA Tour in that area, and he is no longer able to scramble like he could in the past.
Brady overcame a rough start to play well at the second edition of The Match last May. Brady and Mickelson lost to Peyton Manning and Tiger Woods by one hole, and that was seen as a respectable performance considering the GOAT has an 8.1 handicap.
Team DeChambeau and Rodgers
DeChambeau is the biggest hitter on the PGA Tour. He leads the tour in driving distance at 322.4 yards, but he is only slightly more accurate than Mickelson. DeChambeau’s strength tends to lead to a lot of red numbers though.
DeChambeau won his first major in September when he captured the U.S. Open. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and tied for third in the Players Championship, making him the player to beat at many of the tournaments over the last few months. However, his best finish in his last nine events is a tie for ninth at the Wells Fargo Championship two months ago.
There may be something weighing on DeChambeau’s mind ahead of this spectacle. DeChambeau and his long-time caddie, Tim Tucker, split right before the start of the Rocket Mortgage Classic over the Fourth of July weekend, and he ended up missing the cut in a tournament in which he was favored to defend the title he won last year. That could lead to an under-whelming performance from DeChambeau on Tuesday.
Rodgers reportedly has a handicap in the 3-5 range. That’s better than Brady, and that has helped make this pair the favorites with -170 odds. The Mickelson-Brady duo is a +140 underdog.
