Schauffele, Aztecs sweep Barona Cup

Xander Schauffele and Nahum Mendoza III of San Diego State finished 1-2 and the host Aztecs won the Barona Collegiate Cup for the fourth straight year by 12 strokes over the University of San Diego at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside.

Schauffele, a senior from San Diego who won the California State Amateur last summer at La Costa, posted a score of 71-64-64–199, 17-under-par, while Mendoza, a sophomore from San Diego finished at 65-71-66–202.

Grant Forrest of San Diego was third at 68-69-68–205, and Sam Gillis of UC Riverside totaled 64-73-70–207 to tie for fourth with Drew Bender of Pacific, who came in at 71-72-64–207.

David Gazzolo of UC Riverside shot 69-69-70–208 to tie for sixth with PJ Samiere of San Diego State, who wound up at 72-72-64–208, while Alex Chiarella of San Diego carded a score of 69-70-70–209 to tie for eighth with Ryan Ree of San Diego State, who totaled 68-74-67–209.

Riccardo Michelini of San Diego State was 10th at 73-69-68–210, and Aaron Beverly of Sacramento State shot 66-76-69–211 to tie for 11th with Pete Fernandez of UC Irvine, who finished at 72-69-70–211.

Jalen Griffin led San Francisco in a tie for 14th at 73-72-68–213 and Zach Smith topped UC Santa Barbara in a tie for 27th at 70-77-70–217.

San Diego posted a score of 276-284-273–833, 15-under-par, followed by San Diego at 278-283-284–845 and Sacramento State at 274-301-278–853.

UC Irvine wound up at 283-292-282–857 and tied for fourth with UC Riverside, which came in at 277-292-288–857.

Pacific was seventh at 290-295-280–865, while San Francisco was 10th at 296-297-287–880 and UC Santa Barbara tied for 11th at 292-306-283–881.
