San Jose State Beats UCLA by 4 Strokes in USF Intercollegiate

San Jose State’s women’s golf team picked up right where they left off last season.

Kajsa Arwefjall, a senior from Sweden, claimed the individual title and led the 13th-ranked Spartans to the team championship by four strokes over fifth-ranked UCLA in the USF Intercollegiate on the Ocean Course at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Coach Dana Dormann’s team, which won five times last season, posted a score of 277-297-274—848, 4-under-par, while the Bruins finished at 279-285-288—852, followed by Cal at 288-278-287—853, Pepperdine at 282-287-286—855 and Brigham Young at 290-288-287—865.

“I’m super proud of the team’s ability to bounce back and of Kajsa for her record breaking individual performance,” Dormann said. “Thanks go out to USF and the Olympic Club for hosting a wonderful event!”

Colorado totaled 296-289-288—873 to tie for sixth with Oregon State, which wound up at 292-287-294—873, while Santa Clara was eighth at 299-291-287—877, followed by Gonzaga at 295-300-292—887, and host San Francisco at 292-300-297—889.

Arwefjall, who won the 2018 Irish Girls Stroke Play Championship and the 2021 Golf Uppsala Open in Sweden, earned her first college victory with a score of 66-73-64—202, 11-under, followed by Allysha Mae Mateo of Brigham Young at 68-69-68—205, and Cristina Ochoa of Cal at 69-69-69—207.

Caroline Canales of UCLA posted a score of 69-72-69—210 to tie for fourth with her Bruin teammate Ty Akabane, who finished at 68-68-74—210, while Lauren Gomez of Pepperdine wound up at 68-72-72—212 to tie for sixth with Amanda Minni of Oregon State, who came in at 71-71-70—212.

Claire Choi of Santa Clara carded a score of 73-72-68—213 to tie for eighth with Keleiya Romero of Pepperdine, who finished at 70-72-71—213, while Lucia Lopez-Ortega of San Jose State totaled 69-75-70—214 to tie for 10th with Annika Borrelli of Cal, who totaled 73-69-72—214, and Alessia Nobilo of UCLA, who shot 73-68-73—214.

Jade Siphomsay led San Francisco in a tie for 17th at 71-75-71-217.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion San Jose State were Antonia Malate in a tie for 14th at 72-76-68—216, Rebecca Gyllner in a tie for 25th at 73-74-74—221, and Louisa Carlbom in a tie for 31st at 70-80-72—222.
