Confirming media reports from recent days, the PGA Tour announced on Thursday that it will resume its season without spectators because of the Coronavirus pandemic on June 11-14 with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club (pictured) in Fort Worth, Texas.
The announcement included a schedule for the rest of the season and another for the start of the 2020-21 wraparound season. At least the first four tournaments will not include fans.
The PGA Tour has been shut down because of Covid-19 since March 13, following the first round of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
“The health and safety of all associated with the PGA Tour and our global community continues to be our No. 1 priority, and our hope is to play a role–responsibly–in the world’s return to enjoying the things we love,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in the statement.
“Today’s announcement is another positive step for our fans and players as we look toward the future, but as we’ve stressed on several occasions, we will resume competition only when–working closely with our tournaments, partners and communities–it is considered safe to do so under the guidance of the leading public health authorities.”
The RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links at Hilton Head Island, S.C., which originally was scheduled for April 16-19 and then canceled, has been rescheduled for the week after the Charles Schwab Challenge on June 18-21.
The PGA Tour plans to play 11 tournaments, including the 102nd PGA Championship on Aug. 6-9 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco before concluding the season with the three-event FedEx Cup Playoffs.
The Northern Trust at TPC Boston is scheduled for Aug. 20-23, the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill., is set for Aug. 27-30, and The Tour Championship is planned for East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Sept. 3-7.
The new season will start with the Safeway Open at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa on Sept. 10-13, followed by the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaronek, N.Y., on Sept. 17-20, and also will include the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club on Nov. 12-15.
The Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 25-27 at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Kohler, Wis.
