PGA Tour Picks: The Players Championship

By Tom LaMarre

The heart of the PGA Tour season is upon us, starting with The Players Championship this week at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and the Masters is less than a month away.

Those biggies are important to all the players, but this year, no more than top-ranked Rory McIlroy.

Beginning Thursday, McIlroy will try to become the first golfer to go back-to-back in The Players, but that’s nothing compared to what he will face at Augusta National—where he again will try to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to complete the Career Grand Slam.

McIlroy’s game is just about where he wants it to be with seven consecutive finishes in the top five, including a victory in the WGC-HSBC Champions, but he’s a little frustrated that he has been unable to finish off those other tournaments when he was in contention.

“There’s a lot of similarities between the start of this year and the start of last year,” McIlroy said on Sunday after fading to a tie for fifth in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “A lot of chances not converting, but knowing that the game’s pretty much there. So just keep knocking on the door and go up to Ponte Vedra and work on a few things. And, yeah, get back at it again.

“I’m doing what I expect myself to do every week, which is giving myself a chance. I give myself a chance most weeks and the more weeks than not, it’s not going to happen. That’s just the way golf is. I mean, I think my win percentage on tour is like 10 percent and I think that’s pretty high for anyone not being Tiger Woods.

“ … Nobody has successfully defended (at The Players) and to be the first would be cool; to replicate what I did last year would be wonderful.”

McIlroy won’t have to worry about Woods this week because the two-time Players champion is not playing because of back stiffness, but the rest of the best golfers in the world will tee it up in what many people consider “The Fifth Major.”

Among those given the best chance to keep McIlroy from repeating include Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson, Adam Scott, Patrick Reed, Sungjae Im, Patrick Cantlay and Tommy Fleetwood.

Brooks Koepka, Dustin Thomas, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler have not had their best stuff lately, but are capable of turning things around at any time.

But right now, Rory is the one.

BEST BETS

  1. Rory McIlroy, Northern Ireland – This is where the defending FedEx Cup champion really got rolling last season, winning The Players by one stroke over Jim Furyk for the first of his three victories. His best finish in the Players was a tie for third in 2016.
  3.
