Putters designed in the usual way rotate the face open and shut relative to the stroke arc. Eliminating that rotation and keeping the face square with the stroke path is what a zero-torque putter does most often by building a putter having the shaft on the plane of the center of gravity.
The idea has been around for years but recently has become popular with several PGA Tour players using zero-torque models and Callaway’s Odyssey division created the Ai Square 2 Square putter family late last year and now has expanded it by two new models.
First time users will be surprised the toe hang is neutral rather than down or what is called a reverse torque position–very dissimilar to what the traditional putter weighting produces.
Another mild surprise is the noticeable amount of built-in forward press which is actually only 3.3° but helps to eliminate the face opening when often happens when the user applies his own forward press.
Odyssey says these are the most stable Square 2 Square putters they have made with an MOI over 6300.
