McGihon wins U.S. Senior Open Qualifier

Scott McGihon of La Quinta led sectional qualifying for the 39th U.S. Senior Open Championship by shooting 7-under-par 65 at Brentwood Country Club in Los Angeles, one of 34 qualifying sites across the country.

The U.S. Senior Open will be played on June 28-July 1 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo.

McGihon (pictured), a three-time Southern California Amateur champion, collected eight birdies and was medalist by six strokes over highly-decorated amateur Tim Hogarth of Northridge and Wayne Merich of Moorpark, who both finished at 71.

Dennis Martin of Oakland shot 2-under-par 68 to lead qualifying at Diablo Country Club in Diablo, with Tim Bogue of Windsor earning the only other spot available by shooting 70.

Martin, who won the Lake Merced Club Championship in Daly City in January, collected four birdies against two bogeys and was the only player to break par in the 82-player qualifier.

James Camaione of Upland, the 2015 Southern California Senior Match Play champion, won the qualifier at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano with a score of 1-under-par 71, while Gerry Norquist of Anthem, Ariz., and Rick Todd of Canada earned the other two spots available with 72s.

Also qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open was Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves, who shot 3-under-par 69 at Planterra Ridge Golf Club in Peachtree City, Ala., to get into a three-way playoff for the third and final spot available at the site.

Smoltz birdied the first two playoff holes to advance.
