Mallinger Wins Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational

Pebble Beach, Calif. (Nov 22, 2010) — John Mallinger and Jason Gore needed a good warm-up before the final stage of PGA Tour, and got exactly what they were looking for.
The 31-year-old Mallinger holed a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to capture the 39th annual Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational by one stroke over Gore at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links.
“I putted really well all week,” said Mallinger, from Escondido and Long Beach State, who finished 133rd on the PGA Tour money list this season. “On 18, I smoothed an eight-iron in there and was able to make the putt.
“I’ve been playing well the last four-five weeks. This is another confidence boost heading to the Finals stage. I love this place. It’s tough to beat Pebble Beach. I’m glad I came out.”
Mallinger, who finished third in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 2007 and 2008, posted a score of 70-65-70-68–273, 15-under par, to win for the first time since 2005 on the Hooters Tour.
Gore, from Valencia and Pepperdine, who played much of this season on the Nationwide Tour, also carded a birdie on the final hole and wound up at 69-69-72-65–275.
“I tried, but I just got out-played,” said Gore, who claimed his seventh victory on the Nationwide Tour this season and also captured the 2005 84 Lumber Classic on the PGA Tour. “I hit a bunch of greens and played well, and will take that momentum to Q-School.
“It’s about time Mallinger won something here. He loves this place.”
Pat Perez of San Diego and Arizona State shot 71-75-66-65–277 and tied for third with Russ Cochran of the Champions Tour, who finished at 71-65-70-71–277.
Morgan Pressel led the LPGA Tour contingent by shooting 66-72-71-72–281 to finish solo sixth.
Mark Wiebe of San Jose State and Seaside, Ore., tied for 11th at 72-66-71-75–284, and
Bill Lunde of San Diego and UNLV totaled 77-70-71-67–285 to tie for 13th with Kevin Sutherland of Sacramento and Fresno State, who came in at 72-73-65-75–285.
Matt Bettencourt of Alameda and Modesto City College shot 64-72-76-74–286 and tied for 16th with Candie Kung of Fountain Valley and USC, who finished at 68-68-76-74–286, and Nathan Smith of Santa Cruz and Duke, who wound up at 74-71-67-74–286.
Mina Harigae of Monterey and Duke totaled 72-68-74-74–288 and tied for 21st with Chris Tidland of Torrance and Oklahoma State, who finished at 73-69-70-76–288.
Dan Forsman of Arizona State and Provo, Utah, shot 72-71-71-75–289, and Juli Inkster of Los Altos Hills and San Jose State shot 70-71-75-74–290 to tie fore 27th with Daniel Summerhays of BYU and Farmington, Utah, who came in at 76-70-71-73–290.
Michael Putnam of Pepperdine and University Place, Wash., tied for 32nd at 72-75-70-75–292, and Natalie Gulbis of Citrus Heights and the University of Arizona tied for 34th at 72-68-77-76–293.
