Andrea Lee of Stanford captured the individual title and the fifth-ranked Cardinal rallied with a strong second round before holding on to win the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge by two strokes over No. 8 UCLA at Palos Verdes Golf Club https://www.pvgc.com in Palos Verdes Estates.
Stanford claimed its second victory of the 2018-19 season with a score of 295-279-293—867, 15-over-par, while the Bruins were second at 291-289-289—869, and top-ranked USC was third at 299-288-284—871, followed by second-ranked Texas at 298-288-289—875.
“We all loved seeing Andrea take the title in her backyard, a memory that will stick with her for a lifetime,” Stanford Coach Anne Walker said. “This win ranks top-five all-time for the program.
“The field was loaded and the conditions were incredibly difficult. The team stayed patient, hit awesome shots and saved incredible pars.”
Oklahoma State totaled 305-289-290—884 to tie for fifth with Arizona, which finished at 302-297-285—884, while Wake Forest was seventh at 300-292-297—889, Furman at 304-299-293—896, Washington at 308-296-293—897 and Ohio State at 299-302-298—899.
Lee, a junior from nearby Hermosa Beach who is ranked No. 4 in the nation, won three times as a freshman and three times as a sophomore, and her seven victories are one shy of the Stanford record of eight set by Mhairi McKay in 1994-97.
“It feels incredible to get the team and individual win,” Lee said. “I’m so proud of all of us for grinding out there and staying patient. I really had to hang in there today and I’m glad I was able to pull it off.”
Lee carded a score of 70-70-73—213, even par, while Yu-Sang Hou of Arizona shot 72-71-71—214 to tie for second with Agathe Laisne of Texas, who finished at 69-74-71—214.
Clare Legaspi of UCLA totaled 71-74-71—216 to tie for fourth with Jennifer Chang of USC, who wound up at 75-73-68—216, top-ranked Patty Tavatanakit of UCLA, who finished at 73-70-73—216 and Han-Hsuan Yu of Oklahoma State, who shot 73-72-71-216.
Second-ranked Albane Valenzuela of Stanford shot 73-71-73—217 to tie for eighth with six-ranked Mariel Galdiano of UCLA, who totaled 76-71-70—217, eighth-ranked Frida Kinhult of Florida State, who finished at 75-68-74—217, and Sara Kouskova of Texas, who came in at 75-72-70—217.
Rounding out the scoring for team champion Stanford were Ziyi Wang in a tie for 16th at 77-69-74—220, Mika Liu in a tie for 23rd at 75-69-78—222 and Skylar Thompson in a tie for 63rd at 77-81-75—233.
