When temperatures begin to drop across much of the country, the golf season in southwest Utah is hitting its stride. With spectacular red-rock landscapes, championship golf and 300-plus days of sunshine, Greater Zion offers California golfers a very different kind of fall and winter escape.
There are golf destinations where the courses are the attraction. Then there are places where the setting becomes just as memorable as the golf.
Greater Zion belongs firmly in the second category.
Centered around St. George in the southwest corner of Utah, Greater Zion combines brilliant green fairways with towering red cliffs, sandstone formations, desert canyons and ancient black lava fields. It is a landscape that can make even a routine trip from the tee to the green feel anything but routine.
And there is a surprising amount of golf packed into it.
Greater Zion is home to 14 golf courses within a 20-mile radius and enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine annually, creating opportunities for golf throughout the year.
For golfers looking to extend their season into fall and winter, that’s a pretty compelling combination.
A Different Kind of Desert Golf
California golfers certainly aren’t strangers to desert golf. Palm Springs has been one of the game’s great winter destinations for generations.
But Greater Zion looks and feels different.
Here, golf courses move through a landscape shaped by red sandstone, cliffs, canyons and black lava. Drive a relatively short distance and the character of the golf can change dramatically.
That’s part of what makes Greater Zion particularly well suited for a golf trip. Rather than choosing one resort and playing variations of the same experience, golfers can build a trip around courses with very different personalities.
For a first visit, several courses provide a good introduction to what makes the destination special.
Black Desert: A New Chapter
It’s difficult to discuss the growth of Greater Zion golf without starting with Black Desert Resort.
Set among ancient black lava fields and red-rock formations in Ivins, the Black Desert Golf Course is the final golf course design completed by the late Tom Weiskopf.
The course opened in 2023 and has quickly brought additional national attention to the region.
That attention now includes the PGA TOUR. Black Desert is scheduled to host the Bank of Utah Championship in October 2026, putting Greater Zion’s distinctive landscape in front of a national golf audience.
But Black Desert is only part of the story.
Sand Hollow: The Greater Zion Experience
If one course visually captures the Greater Zion golf experience, Sand Hollow Resort deserves to be in the conversation.
Designed by John Fought with Andy Staples, the Championship Course stretches to more than 7,300 yards and works its way through dramatic desert terrain, with elevated tees, ridgelines, canyons and expansive views.
It’s the kind of golf course where remembering to take a picture can occasionally become as important as remembering your yardage.
Sand Hollow is also particularly attractive for a golf getaway because visitors can combine golf and accommodations in one location. The resort offers Stay & Play packages, making it easier to build a multi-day golf trip around the property while adding other Greater Zion courses along the way.
And the surrounding area adds another dimension to a visit. Nearby Sand Hollow State Park offers a completely different playground of reservoir, dunes and desert terrain.
Copper Rock: A Newer Addition Worth Discovering
Located in Hurricane near Sand Hollow State Park, Copper Rock Golf Course has quickly become another important piece of the Greater Zion golf landscape.
The links-influenced design combines natural desert terrain, sand and broad views with a modern championship layout.
Copper Rock has also attracted competitive golf, further adding to the region’s growing reputation as more than simply a warm-weather golf escape.
The course demonstrates something important about Greater Zion: this isn’t a destination relying on one or two famous courses.
The golf inventory continues to evolve.
The Ledges: Golf Above St. George
For yet another perspective, head north of St. George to The Ledges Golf Club.
Sitting approximately 900 feet above St. George and adjacent to Snow Canyon State Park, the course offers sweeping views of the surrounding red-rock landscape.
The elevation and setting create a distinctly different experience from the courses closer to the desert floor.
And that’s exactly the point.
Black lava one day. Red-rock cliffs the next. Elevated desert views after that.
Four courses into a trip and Greater Zion still hasn’t shown you everything.
Where to Stay
One of the advantages of a Greater Zion golf trip is the variety of ways it can be put together.
Golfers who want to stay where they play can make Black Desert Resort a home base, combining accommodations with access to one of the destination’s most talked-about new golf courses.
Sand Hollow Resort provides another golf-centered option, with accommodations and Stay & Play packages built around its golf experience.
For travelers looking to combine golf with wellness, hiking and the scenery surrounding Snow Canyon, Red Mountain Resort offers another very different Greater Zion experience.
There are also numerous hotels, vacation rentals and other accommodations throughout St. George, Ivins, Hurricane and the surrounding communities, allowing golfers to choose a home base that fits the type of trip they want to build.

Don’t Try to Play It All
With 14 courses concentrated in such a small area, the temptation on a first Greater Zion trip is obvious: squeeze in as much golf as possible.
We’d suggest doing the opposite.
Play a great course in the morning. Have lunch. Explore St. George. Drive through Snow Canyon State Park. Spend an afternoon around Sand Hollow State Park. Or simply sit somewhere and watch the colors of the surrounding cliffs change as the sun gets lower.
Greater Zion encompasses much more than golf, including four state parks and access to an enormous range of outdoor recreation.
And, of course, there’s the destination that gives the region its name.
Zion National Park makes it possible to combine a golf trip with one of America’s great outdoor destinations.
That combination gives Greater Zion something many golf destinations can’t easily duplicate.
You don’t necessarily have to choose between a golf vacation and an outdoor getaway.
You can have both.
Why Fall and Winter?
Perhaps the best reason for California golfers to put Greater Zion on their radar right now is timing.
While golf seasons elsewhere begin winding down, southwest Utah remains a viable golf destination. Greater Zion’s climate provides opportunities to play throughout the year, while fall and winter can also be excellent times to experience the area’s outdoor attractions.
There’s another benefit: the scenery doesn’t go into an offseason.
Green fairways against red sandstone and black lava may actually become more striking when much of the rest of the country has traded golf shoes for winter boots.
Start With Four. Then Come Back.
For a first Greater Zion golf trip, Black Desert, Sand Hollow, Copper Rock and The Ledges would make quite an introduction.
But we deliberately wouldn’t call that the definitive Greater Zion golf itinerary.
There is much more.
Sky Mountain Golf Course overlooks dramatic desert terrain. Entrada at Snow Canyon winds through a spectacular landscape of black lava and sandstone. Sunbrook Golf Club offers 27 holes, while Green Spring Golf Course has long been part of the area’s golf scene.
Coral Canyon Golf Course, Dixie Red Hills Golf Course, Southgate Golf Club, St. George Golf Club, SunRiver and Bloomington each add another piece to the destination’s golf story.
That’s what makes Greater Zion interesting.
It’s difficult to experience it all in one trip.
And that’s a pretty good reason to come back.
