Knapp survives in 115th U.S. Am

Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa coasted into the match-play portion of the 115th United States Amateur Championship, but once he got their things didn’t come quite as easily.

Knapp, a senior at UCLA, finished third in stroke-play qualifying, but then needed 21 holes to turn back Noah Goodwin of Corinth, Texas, in the round of 64 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

In other matches, Maverick McNealy of Portola Valley and Stanford continued his strong run after winning the Northern California Amateur Match Play Championship last week by getting past Austin Connelly of Canada with two late birdies, 1 up; Bryson DeChambeau of Clovis, the reigning NCAA individual champion from SMU, routed Robby Salomon of Monterey, 8 and 6, and Sean Crocker of Westlake Village and USC beat Romain Langesque of France, 4 and 2.

Ryan Ruffels of Australia ousted Beau Hossler of Mission Viejo and the University of Texas, 5 and 4; Daniel Wetterich of Cincinnati eliminated Corey Pereira of Cameron Park and the University of Washington, 2 and 1; David Oraee of Greeley, Colo., downed Johnny De Los Reyes of Antioch and St. Mary’s , 2 up, and Cameron Young of Scarborough, N.Y., knocked off defending champion Gunn Yang of San Diego State and South Korea, 3 and 2.
