Huang, Stanford claim Regional titles

Franklin Huang and Maverick McNealy finished 1-2 in the individual standings and Stanford put four players in the top 10 while winning the Tucson Regional by 14 strokes over Oregon at the Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Ariz.

Stanford posted a score of 274-284-275—833, 31-under-par, while Oregon finished at 285-288-274—847, followed by Alabama-Birmingham at 283-291-283—857, California at 287-293-282—862 and Wake Forest at 286-295-282—863.

The top five teams advanced to the NCAA Championships on May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

“I’m really excited that our team kept the momentum we have had over the past month,” said Coach Conrad Ray, who led Stanford to its second regional title in three seasons. “Franklin was stellar this week, along with many of his teammates who had chances to win today. The Gallery was very demanding, and doing well on a course like that creates confidence for what lies ahead at the NCAA Championships.”

UC Riverside was sixth at 288-297-281—866, while North Florida totaled 293-283-291—867 to tie for seventh with Georgia Tech, which totaled 297-288-282—867, and St. Mary’s was ninth at 291-307-281—879, followed by North Texas at 296-301-290—887.

Huang (pictured), a sophomore from Poway, carded a score of 67-69-68—204, 12-under, followed by McNealy, a junior from Portola Valley at 68-71-67—206, while Matt Lutz of UC Riverside was third at 66-75-68—209 and qualified for the NCAAs as an individual.

“I had the putter going throughout the week, and it was nice to be able to go out and play knowing the rest of the guys would put up a good number,” said Huang, who claimed his first college victory.

K.K. Limbhasut of Cal shot 68-73-69—210 to tie for fourth with Lee Hodges of Alabama-Birmingham, who totaled 70-67-73—210, and Thomas Lin of Oregon, who finished at 69-68-73—210.

Aaron Wise of Oregon was seventh at 72-72-67—211, followed by David Boote of Stanford at 69-72-71—212, while Jeffrey Swegle shot 72-72-69—213 to tie for ninth with Shotaro Ban of Cal, who came in at 70-73-70—213.

Connor Blick led St. Mary’s in a tie for 12th at 68-79-68—215.
