Hagestad Claims Thomas Title by 9 Shots

Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach coasted to a nine-stroke victory over Nick Geyer of San Diego in the George C. Thomas Jr. Amateur Championship on the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club.

Scott Harvey captured the title four straight years from 2016-19, but the tournament was canceled last year because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The 30-year-old Hagestad, the 2019 AmateurGolf.Com Mid-Amateur Player of the Year and 2016 United States Mid-Amateur champion who has played in the Walker Cup three times, posted a winning score of 71-69-67—207, 9-under-par, on his home course.

Geyer was second at 73-72-71—216, followed by Nico Bollini of San Diego at 70-74-75—219, and Jeronimo Esteve of Windermere, Fla., at 73-73-74—220, while Derek Busby of Ruston, La., totaled 75-74-72—221 to tie for fifth with Ryan Abate of Weston, Fla., who wound up at 69-78-74—221.

Taylor Wood of Coto de Caza shot 78-72-72—222 to tie for seventh with Stephen Summers of Dallas, who wound up at 79-70-73—222, and Patrick Duffy of Omaha, Neb., who finished at 72-75-75—222.

Michael Barbosa of St. Petersburg, Fla., totaled 78-74-71—223 to tie for 10th with Skip Berkmeyer of Town & Country, Mo., who shot 73-75-75—223, Aaron Hickman of Tyler, Texas, who finished at 74-74-75—223, Patrick Christovich of New Orleans, who wound up at 73-74-76—223, and Tug Maude of Atlanta, who came in at 75-71-77—223.

Mike McCoy of Des Moines, Iowa, a five-time Iowa Amateur champion and 2015 Walker Cup member, shot 68-72-74—214 to win the Senior Championship Division by five strokes over his friend Gene Elliott of West Des Moines, who finished at 68-72-74—214.
