Golf’s Longest Day Sends U.S. Open Hopefuls to Shinnecock Hills

The road to the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills ran through 13 final qualifying sites around the world, including Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento.

Known as “Golf’s Longest Day,” U.S. Open Final Qualifying is one of the most demanding tests in the game: 36 holes in one day, with players battling for a limited number of spots in the national championship.

This year, final qualifying was held in England, Texas, Japan, Canada and across the United States. The final wave of qualifying took place June 8 at 10 sites, with 43 players earning their way into the field at Shinnecock Hills.

At Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, four players punched their tickets to the U.S. Open:

  • Taylor Montgomery
  • Eric Lee (amateur)
  • Matthew Robles (amateur)
  • Marek Fleming (amateur)

The Sacramento qualifier highlighted the open nature of the championship, with three amateurs advancing from the California site.

A True Test of Golf’s Open Championship

Final qualifying remains one of the most compelling traditions in golf because it gives professionals, amateurs, college stars and mini-tour players the same opportunity: play 36 holes, survive the pressure, and earn a place in the U.S. Open.

For California golf fans, Del Paso Country Club once again played a role in that story, sending four players — including three amateurs — to one of the biggest stages in the game.

The 2026 U.S. Open will be played June 18–21 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.
