Donnelly-Camaione win NCGA Senior 4-Ball

Steve Donnelly and James Camaione of Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside made par on the second playoff hole to turn back Randy Haag and David Nelson in the 20th Northern California Golf Association Senior Four-Ball Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Donnelly (pictured, left) and Camaione (second from left) posted a score of 70-63-69—202, 11-under-par, while Haag (second from right), of the Olympic Club in San Francisco and Nelson (right) of Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, finished at 67-65-70—202.

“I don’t think so much about winning,” Camaione said. “You remember the losses more before wins. I’m numb after this. Those last six holes, Steve hit some great shots that kept us in it.”

Said Donnelly: “I can’t get over winning, and all the past winners. Guys like Randy (Haag), Gary Vanier, Casey Boyns, Jim Knoll. We did the same thing as them.”

Camaione sank a 30-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole and a 24-footer four holes later to open a two-stroke lead, but Haag tied it up by holing out from the fairway for an eagle on No. 16.

Haag, who won the NCGA Four-Ball title with Chip Lutz the last two years, and Nelson fell behind with a bogey on the 17th, but forced the playoff with a birdie on the final hole of regulation.

“We didn’t play well enough to win,” Haag said. “We had too many bogeys. It’s golf, those things happen. It was exciting though.”

Casey Boyns of Nicklaus Club in Monterey and Jeff Britton of Tehama Country Club in Carmel totaled 69-72-65—208 and won a card-off to finish third ahead of Tony Padilla of Winchester Country Club in Vista and Dick Cartmell of Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Wash., who wound up at 69-68-69—208.

Jim Knoll of Rooster Run Golf Club in Petaluma and Kemp Richardson of El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Nigel captured the NCGA Super Senior Four-Ball title with a score of 70-69-63—202, 11-under.

Mark Miller of Antioch Golf Club and Frank Pieper of Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach were second at 70-66-71—207.
