Defending national champion Pepperdine captured its fourth consecutive West Coast Conference Championship, and 22nd overall, by five strokes over Loyola Marymount and Brigham Young, while Riley Lewis of Loyola Marymount claimed the individual title at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.
The Waves posted a score of 288-285-274—847, 17-under-par, while Loyola Marymount finished at 288-289-275—852, and Brigham Young wound up at 291-285-276—852.
“I thought the guys performed awesome today and played flawless golf, like the champions they are,” Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. “Loyola Marymount played great golf today and our guys stepped up and responded to the challenge. I’m really impressed with the way we played.
“We have 10 or 12 days to prepare for the Regionals and if we continue to perform the way we did this week, we’re in a great spot and I’m optimistic about the possibilities of where we might go.”
San Francisco was fourth at 292-284-281—857, followed by Santa Clara at 293-292-285—870, University of San Diego at 289-296-286—871, while St. Mary’s totaled 296-295-285—876 to tie for seventh with Gonzaga, which would up at 304-292-280—876, and Pacific was ninth at 294-310-292—896.
Lewis, a Loyola Marymount sophomore from Prescott, Ariz., claimed his second college title with a score of 69-70-70—209, 7-under, while Joey Vrzich of Pepperdine shot 71-72-67—210 to tie for second with his Waves teammate William Mouw, who finished at 74-67-69—210.
“Riley is a stud,” Loyola Marymount Coach Jason D’Amore said. “He was patient all week and has been working really hard. He deserved this win.”
Toby Briggs of San Francisco totaled 71-70-70—211 to tie for fourth with Cole Ponich of Brigham Young, who wound up at 69-74-68—211, and Soren Lind of San Francisco, who shot 70-71-70—211.
Berk Harvey of Santa Clara carded a score of 74-68-70—212 to tie for seventh with Max Brenchley of Brigham Young, who finished at 75-67-70—212, while Gavin Cohen of Loyola Marymount totaled 73-73-67—213 to tie for ninth with Charlie Magruder of Gonzaga, who wound up at 77-69-67—213, and Andi Xu of San Diego, who came in at 74-71-68—213.
Kristian Bressum led St. Mary’s in a tie for 21st at 72-74-71—217 and Haakom Mathiesen of Pacific tied for 26th at 73-75-74—222.
Rounding out the scoring for team champion Pepperdine were Dylan Menante at 74-72-69—215 in a tie for 15th with Waves teammate Derek Hitchner, who finished at 71-74-70—215, while Joe Highsmith tied for 19th at 72-75-69—216.
