San Diego State, Jones of Colorado State Claim Mountain West Titles

San Diego State rallied on the back nine in the final round to win the Mountain West Conference Championship by four strokes over Colorado State on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

Connor Jones of Colorado State took home the individual title.

“The Aztecs captured their fourth MW Championship since 2011 with an incredible back nine, overcoming a six-stroke deficit at the turn to win by four strokes!” a post on the San Diego State Facebook page read. “Got the job done.”

San Jose State totaled 294-282-287—863 to tie for sixth with Wyoming, which finished at 290-290-283—863, while Fresno State was eighth at 293-291-293—877, followed by Utah State at 293-299-291—883, Nevada Las Vegas at 293-303-293—889, and Air Force at 313-309-311—933.

Jones, of Colorado State, claimed the individual title with a score of 67-66-73—206, 10-under, while Hugo Townsend of Boise State was second at 70-70-67—207, and Zihao Jin of San Diego State shot 70-68-70—208 to tie for third with Aztec teammate Youseff Guezzele, who finished at 70-66-72—208, Sam Choi of New Mexico, who wound up at 73-70-65—208, and Quin Vidal Nora of Nevada, who came in at 73-67-68—208.

“Connor has been playing so well this semester,” Colorado State Coach Christian Newton said  after Jones, a junior from Westminster, Colo., claimed the second title of his college career. “He has been a wonderful addition to our team. I’m very happy for him, and it’s great see his efforts pay off.”

Matthew Manganello of Fresno State shot 71-70-70—211 to tie for seventh with Jimmy Dales of Wyoming, who finished at 69-71-71—211, while Esteban Jaramillo of Utah State totaled 74-70-68—212 to tie for ninth with Patrick Azevedo of Wyoming, who finished at 73-69-70—212, and Christoph Bleier of Colorado State, who wound up at 71-71-70—212.

Kotara Murata led San Jose State in a tie for 15th at 72-72-70—214.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion San Diego State were Steve Sugimoto in a tie for 12th at 71-68-74—213, Puwit Anupansuebsai in a tie for 15th at 73-71-70—214, and Justin Hastings in a tie for 38th at 72-74-79—225.
