Cohn wins NCGA Mid-Amateur in playoff

Matt Cohn of San Francisco made par on the second playoff hole to turn back defending champion Bobby Bucey of Concord and win the 27th annual Northern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach.

Jeff Wilson of Fairfield, who captured the Southern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur in April, also was part of the playoff but couldn’t pull off the double when he dropped out with bogey on the first extra hole after hitting his drive into the trees.

“I don’t know what happened those last 25 holes,” said the 37-year-old Cohn, who played the first 11 holes in 4-over before turning it around. “I just played the way I’ve been playing (lately).

“You just don’t know what’s going to happen. You just come out and try to play your best. Things are definitely trending in the right direction. I think this win will help me not put so much pressure on myself.”

Cohn, who captured the 2016 NCGA Public Links Championship, posted a score of 73-67—140, 2-under, while Bucey wound up at 71-69—140 and Wilson finished at 72-68—140.

Ryan Sloane of Campbell was fourth at 68-73—141, followed by Domingo Jojola of San Francisco at 71-72—143, while Todd Doss of Millbrae and Kevin Wolf of Lodi both shot 73-71—141 to tie for sixth.

Daniel Griffiths of Redwood City posted a score of 75-70—145 to tie for eighth with Garrett Wagner of Brentwood, who came in at 74-71—145, while Tanner Makimoto of Roseville was 10th at 75-72—147.
