Callaway has attacked the problem of increased short shot control by constructing the Opus SP+ wedge with several changes from the preceding SP model. The part of the head above the sole has been hollowed out even more, 25% more, so the weight saved increased by 6g to 29.7g making a larger Spin Pocket.
This may not seem like much, but engineers could then add tungsten to the top of the body, so the center of gravity was much higher and this gives the ball a flatter more penetrating flight. The other benefit was production of more spin and higher spin means more control on those critical scoring shots around the green.
The Spin Gen 2.0 face of the SP+ has a 17° groove angle with tighter pitch spacing producing more consistency no matter which part of the face the ball impacts. The cross-hatching between grooves has been deepen as well for to increase stopping spin.
Brian Herr, R&D Manager – Wedges said, “Opus SP+ takes on the best qualities of Opus SP, with lower launch, more spin, and engineering control. We’ve taken the Spin Pocket and made it larger; we’ve hollowed out more of the sole and doing that allows us to put Tungsten up in the topline. We have a larger Spin Pocket than we had in Opus SP. We’ve also added even more Tungsten up top to raise the CG, which allows us to flight the ball lower for more control.”
