Cabreras win PNC Father-Son Challenge

Team Cabrera wasn’t even in the original field for the 2017 PNC Father-Son Challenge.

No matter, because once they got to Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Grande Lakes in Orlando, Fla., Angel Cabrera and Angel Cabrera Jr. of Argentina outplayed the other 19 teams, winning by three strokes over defending champions David Duval and stepson Nick Karavites, and Bernhard and Jason Langer.

“The good thing was that when I missed, he hit a good shot and the other way around,” said the 48-year-old Cabrera, who captured the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont and the 2009 Masters. “That was crucial. This is a very special win, I can assure you of that.

“I didn’t have a very good year on tour, so I wasn’t really playing that well. But once you make it to a golf tournament like this and you are able to tee it up on the first hole, you know you can win.

“This is certainly my best week of the year. To play alongside all the legends like Nicklaus, Trevino, Faldo, Langer and so many others, as well as playing alongside my son, has been the greatest week of the year.”

Added Angelito Cabrera: “(This week) has been so special that it really can’t compare to any event I have played in the past.”

The Cabreras, who were added to the field after Curtis and Tom Strange withdrew, posted a score of 59-60—119, 25-under-par, while Team Duval and Team Langer both finished at 61-61—122.

Mark and Shaun O’Meara shot 60-63—123 to tie for fourth with Jerry and Wesley Paste, who totaled 62-61—123, while Tom and David Kite tied for sixth with Stewart and Reagan Cink, both teams coming in at 62-62—124.

Retief and Leo Goosen were eighth at 64-61—125, while John and Little John Daly wound up at 62-64—126 to tie for ninth with Tom and Thomas Lehman, and Fred and Taylor Funk, both finishing at 63-63—126.

Greg Norman and Greg Norman Jr. shot 66-63—129 to tie for 12th with Lee and Connor Janzen, who totaled 68-61—129, followed Lee and Daniel Trevino at 64-67—131, and Jack and (grandson) Gary Nicklaus Jr. at 68-64—132.

Nick and Matthew Faldo carded a score of 66-67—133 to tie for 16th with Padraig and Paddy Harrington, who finished at 67-66—133, and Lanny and Travis Wadkins, who wound up at 68-65—133.

Justin and Larry Leonard were 19th at 67-67—134, followed by Nick and Greg Price at 70-67—137.
