Björken Wins, Helps Cal State Monterey Bay Tie for Second in Otter Invitational

Simon Björken of Cal State Monterey Bay claimed the individual title and helped the host Otters tie for second behind Barry University of Miami, Fla., in the Otter Invitational at Bayonet Blackhorse Golf Course in Seaside.

Björken, a sophomore from Sweden who captured the 2019 Cobra Puma Junior Challenge and also won two amateur events at home in 2016, earned his first college victory by three strokes with a score of 67-69-69—205, 11-under-par.

“I couldn’t be happier for Simon, Cal State Monterey Bay Coach Jason Owen said. “He works so hard and is an extremely good player. This was a formidable ‘W’ for him. This tournament was a huge bounce back from (finishing ninth in the Wildcat Classic) last week and should prove that we will be good.”

Nicolas Quintero of Barry was second at 69-68-71—208, followed by Ryan Hong of Cal State East Bay at 66-74-69—209, Griffin Pace of Sonoma State at 69-73-68—210, AJ Fitzgerald of Cal State Monterey Bay at 74-67-72—213, and Felipe Alvarez of Barry at 72-72-70—214.

Chris Ebster of Stanislaus State shot 71-73-71—215 to tie for seventh with Nathan Jetton, also of  Stanislaus State, who wound up at 72-71-72—215.

Sean Markham of Sonoma posted a score of 71-75-70—216 to tie for ninth with Xavier Coreno of Cal State East Bay, who totaled 75-70-71—216, Adam Alvarez of Florida Southern, who finished at 76-68-72—216, and Santiago Chamorro of Barry, who came in at  72-71-73—216.

Travis Miller of Chico State tied for 13th at 73-71-73—217, Edvin Backstrom of Holy Names University in Oakland totaled 75-72-71—218 to tie for 15th, Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos shot 78-68-74—220 to finish in a tie for 22nd that including his Cougar teammate Greg Mouser, who wound up at 71-73-76—220, and Mark Williams of Cal State San Bernardino, who tied for 26th at 74-73-74–221.

Barry, which also won the Shark Invitational last week in Florida, made it two in a row with a score of 290-279-287—856, 11-under, while Cal State Monterey Bay totaled 289-289-289—867 to tie for second with Sonoma State, which finished at 280-301-286—867.

Georgia Southwestern was fourth at 292-301-285—878, followed by Cal State East Bay at 297-290-292—879, and Cal State San Bernardino at 295-295-298—888, while Stanislaus State finished at 301-297-291—889 to tie for seventh with Hawaii-Hilo, which came in at 304-285-300—889.

Simon Fraser posted a score of 288-301-302—891 to finish ninth, while Holy Names wound up at 294-293-305—892 and tied for 10th with St. Mary’s of Texas, which totaled 296-302-294—892.

Cal State San Marcos carded a score of at 303-287-306—896 to wind up 13th, while Chico State totaled 295-303-300 898 to finish 15th. and the Cal State Monterey “B” team was 16th at 303-308-288—899.
