Yu, San Jose State Sweep Pacific Titles

Sean Yu of San Jose State claimed the first individual title of his college career and led the Spartans to a three-stroke victory over Brigham Young in the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at The Reserve at Spanos Park https://reserveatspanospark.com in Stockton.

San Jose State carded a score of 282-281-285—848, 16-under-par, followed by BYU at 291-276-284—851, Nevada at 292-281-280—853, Santa Clara at 289-285-280—854 and Long Beach State at 286-283-287—856.

The Spartans captured their first title since winning the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Championship.

Grand Canyon was sixth at 293-284-282—859, followed by Fresno State at 291-282-291—864, Cal State Northridge at 289-290-290—869, Sacramento State at 288-292-291—871 and UC Irvine at 300-281-296—877.

UC Riverside was 14th at 300-291-291—882, followed by California Baptist at 304-293-298—895 and host Pacific at 310-288-298—896.

Yu, a senior from Taiwan who attended Arrowhead Christian Academy in Redlands and won the 2016 Santa Clara County Amateur Championship, led virtually wire-to-wire and posted a score of 64-69-72—205, 11-under.

Matthew McCarty of Santa Clara shot 72-68-67—207 to tie for second with Sam Harned of Nevada, who finished at 69-70-68—207, while Rhett Rasmussen of BYU was fourth at 71-65-72—208.

Hunter Epson of Long Beach State carded a score of 72-72-66—210 to tie for fifth with Michael Cliff of Fresno State, who wound up at 69-67-74—210, while Carson Lundell of BYU shot 75-70-67—212 to tie for seventh with Caleb Shetler of San Jose State, who finished at 69-75-68—212, and Nathan Cogswell of Seattle, who came in at 72-69-71—212.

Kevin Huff of Fresno State shot 75-68-70—213 to tie for 10th with Mats Ege of Cal State Northridge, who totaled 71-69-73—213, Ryan Monsalve of Cal Baptist, who finished at 70-70-73—213, Matthew Braley of Grand Canyon, who wound up at 72-73-68—213, and Peter Kuest of BYU, who came in at 72-70-71—213.

Tyler Moore led UC Riverside with a score of 72-72-70—214 to finish in a tie for 15th that included Ethan Davidson of Sacramento State, who finished at 70-72-72—214, while Austin Fox of Pacific tied for 20th at 74-71-70—215, Jonathan Kang of UC Irvine tied for 34th at 76-69-73—218, and Evan Peterson of St. Mary’s tied for 50th at 72-79-70—221.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion San Jose State were Carl Corpus at 76-70-73—219 in a tie for 40th that included his Spartan teammate Matthew Heitel, who finished at 73-70-76—219, and Bryce Wortman in a tie for 63rd at 81-72-72—225.
