Norman Xiong of Oregon came from behind in the final round to claim his third victory of the season by one stroke over Riley Elmes of Loyola Marymount and helped the host Ducks share the team title in the Oregon Duck Invitational at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Xiong, a sophomore from Canyon Lake, Calif., who made five birdies in six holes through No. 15, posted a score of 67-71-64—202, 11-under par, while Elmes finished at 71-66-66—203, followed by Joe Harvie of Seattle at 69-71-70—210, and Spencer Tibbits of Oregon State at 71-69-71—211.
“The greens were rolling really nice and it was definitely score-able, soft conditions,” said Xiong, who tied Aaron Wise (2016) and Wyndham Clark (2017) for the most victories in one season by an Oregon golfer. “(Yesterday) my game felt really good, but I just couldn’t make the putts and (today) I played the same kind of golf and made a lot more putts.
“I think what really got me going was hole 8. I was in the middle of the fairway and I kind of squandered a shot and almost three-putted, so that really got me geared up to really go on that run.”
Isaiah Logue of Liberty shot 68-73-71—212 to tie for fifth with Shawn Lu of Oregon State, who wound up at 75-67-70—212, while Alex Lee of Fresno State totaled 72-69-72—213 to tie for seventh with Matthew McCarty of Santa Clara, who came in at 68-76-69—213.
Pavan Sagoo of St. Mary’s carded a score of 71-71-72—214 to tie for 10th with Ryan Gronlund of Oregon, who finished at 74-68-72—214.
Kevin Velo led San Jose State in a tie for 24th at 74-73-74—221, while Casey Scott of Pacific tied for 36th at 69-76-79—224.
Oregon recorded a score of 289-291-285—865 to share the team title with Liberty, which finished at 290-290-285—865, while Santa Clara wound up at 293-286-290—869 to tie for third with Oregon State, which totaled 298-282- 289—869.
St. Mary’s was fifth at 294-291-290—875, followed by Arizona at 292-290- 295—877, Colorado State at 294-295-290—879, San Jose State at 296-292- 294—882, Alabama-Birmingham at 303-297-283—883 and Loyola Marymount at 298-294-296—888.
Fresno State finished 11th at 300-294-297—891 and Pacific was 14th at 296-305-306—907.
