Matthew Wolff one-upped Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa to win on the PGA Tour in his fourth start on the circuit.
The 20-year-old Wolff sank a 26-foot eagle putt on the final hole to cap a 6-under-par 65 and win the inaugural 3M Open by one stroke over DeChambeau and Morikawa at TPC Twin Cities https://tpc.com/twincities in Blaine, Minn.
“I’ve been told so many times before that I was born for moments like these; I live for moments like these,” said Wolff, of Agoura Hills and Oklahoma State, who captured the NCAA Championship in May. “It doesn’t get better than this.
“I had a blast out there, and to make that putt was everything. You know, for me it was just kind of staying calm, doing what I do. And not a lot of putts were dropping today. I kind of told myself, you know, this wouldn’t be a bad time for one to go my way. …
“It was the most excited I’ve ever been. I’m usually not an emotional guy at all, but tears definitely came to my eyes when I stepped off and picked that ball up out of the hole.”
Wolff, who was tied for the lead with Morikawa and DeChambeau after shooting 62 in the third round, had three birdies on the back nine before his closing eagle and finished at 21-under 263.
DeChambeau, from Clovis, gunning for his sixth PGA Tour, sank a 7-foot eagle putt minutes earlier on the final hole and shot 66, while Morikawa, from La Canada Flintridge and Cal, collected six birdies on the back nine, but missed his 22-foot eagle putt on the last hole to also close with a 66.
“I hit a really good putt,” said Morikawa, 22, who was making his third PGA Tour start and also lipped out a birdie putt at No. 17. “I thought it was good from the start and once it got about halfway I knew it was a little low. What can you do?”
Said the eighth-ranked DeChambeau: “It’s so competitive now. Anyone can win on any week. It’s absolutely impressive.”
Adam Hadwin of Canada carded a 67 to finish three strokes back in fourth, while Carlos Ortiz of Mexico totaled 64 to tie for fifth with Wyndham Clark, who had a 68, and Lucas Glover recorded a 62 to wind up one more down in a tie for seventh with Sam Burns (64), Brian Harman (65), Joey Garber (65), Troy Merritt (68) and Hideki Matsuyama (68) of Japan.
Top-ranked Brooks Koepka closed with a 72 to tie for 65th and Jason Day of Australia tied for 66th after a 71.
