Karrie Webb birdied three of the last five holes to regain a one-shot lead over Angela Stanford heading to the last round of the HSBC Women’s Champions on the Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore.
Webb, seeking her 41st victory on the LPGA Tour and 57th as a professional, was 1-over-par and without a birdie through 13 holes before she got back on track to wind up with a 2-under 70.
“It was a pretty solid round really,” said Webb, who captured the Women’s Australian Open for the fifth time a few weeks ago. “I didn’t probably hit it as good as I would have liked, but I felt like I had a lot of in between numbers today and I really had trouble a few times picking the right club. So probably more poor decision-making rather than bad swing.
“I only made one bogey out of all of that, and yeah, the front nine had played a little bit easier for me this week and it didn’t play as easy today, but I got through it at even par. I finished off strong the last five holes, which really makes the round look really good.”
Stanford, trying to win for the first time since claiming this tournament two years ago, also birdied three of the last five holes to stay right behind Webb by posting a 69.
Azahara Munoz of Spain eagled the seventh hole en route to a 67 and was three shots back in a tie for third with Teresa Lu of Taiwan, who had a 70.
Paula Creamer was fifth after a 69, followed by Morgan Pressel in sixth following a 70, and Suzann Pettersen of Norway was seventh, also after shooting 70.
Top-ranked Inbee Park of South Korea shot 71 and was tied for 10th.
