Vu, USC take Bruin Wave Invitational titles

Lilia Vu of UCLA claimed the seventh victory of her career and USC took home its third victory of the season in the Bruin Wave Invitational in chilly conditions at San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The Trojans, No. 9 in Golfweek national rankings, won the tournament for the fourth time in nine years with a score of 300-298-298—896, 32-under-par, followed by second-ranked UCLA 306-297-301—904, fifth-ranked Stanford at 303-309-294—906, San Diego State at 302-308-303—913 and Washington at 308-306-300—914.

Colorado was sixth at 304-315-309—928, Sacramento State at 311-315-303—929, Pepperdine at 311-316-304—931, San Francisco at 318-321-305—944 and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 310-321-314—945.

California tied for 11th at 307-329-310—946, San Jose State was 13th at 315-316-323—954, Fresno State finished 14th at 317-325-317—959, and Cal State Northridge was 16th at 324-329-323—976.

“We’re pretty excited,” said Coach Andrea Gaston of USC, which won the Minnesota Invitational and the East Lake Cup earlier this season. “This young team is really special and they just played their hearts out. It was a really difficult course with really difficult greens that required a lot of patience. You couldn’t let up on the round. You had to stay focused on each and every shot.

“This was our third tournament in three weeks. It was a test for this young team and with a second place last week and a win today, I’m very proud of them.”

Vu, a junior from Fountain Valley, claimed her third straight victory and with seven in her career tied Bronte Law’s school record. Vu repeated as champion of the Bruin Wave Invitational with a score of 69-71-75—215, 1-under.

Albane Valenzuela of Stanford was second at 72-73-72—217, followed by Jennifer Chang of USC at 76-71-75—222, while Mariel Galdiano shot 77-70-77—224 to tie for fourth with Allisen Corpuz of USC, who finished at 73-77-74—224.

Sarah Rhee of Washington was sixth at 77-75-73—225, while Sara Kjellker of San Diego State totaled 76-73-77—226 to tie for seventh with Gabriela Ruffels of USC, who wound up at 76-75-75—226.

Milagros Chaves of San Diego State carded a score of 76-80-71—227 to tie for ninth with Rino Sasaki of Washington, who came in at 75-76-76—227.

Hira Naveed shot 74-78-76—228 to lead Pepperdine in a tie for 11th that included Marthe Wold of California at 76-77-75—228 and Tatiana Wijaya, also of Pepperdine, at 76-76-76—228.

Astha Madan of Sacramento State totaled 78-79-74—231 to wind up in a tie for 21st that included her Hornet teammate Julia Becker, who finished at 79-79-73—231, while Caroline Cantlay of Cal Poly SLO tied for 27th at 79-77-77—233.

Vanessa Ha of San Francisco posted a score of 77-78-80—235 to finish in a tie for 36th that included her USF teammate Emily Laskin, who wound up at 77-80-78—235.

Franziska Friedrich of San Jose State tied for 40th at 77-79-80—236, Brigitte Thibault of Fresno State tied for 44th at 78-83-76—237 and Shenna DeLeon of Cal State Northridge was 55th at 82-81-78—241.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion USC were Alyaa Abdulghany in a tie for 16th at 80-75-74—229 and Aiko Leong tied for 27th at 75-77-81—233.
