Triplett wins with clutch par at No. 18

Kirk Triplett holed a six-foot par putt on the last hole to win the Ace Group Classic by one stroke over Bernhard Langer, Duffy Waldorf and Olin Browne on the Talon Course at Twin Eagles Golf Club in Naples, Fla.

Triplett, who closed with a 6-under-par 66, was playing in the final group with Waldorf and Langer, who both made bogeys on the final hole.

“I’m excited to wiggle that last putt in there,” said Triplett, who claimed his third victory on the Champions Tour after winning the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach each of the last two years.

“That was a tough pin placement and I ran my first putt past the hole, but I’m tickled to get (the last one in.).”

Waldorf, from Northridge and UCLA, also closed with a 66, but remained winless on the senior circuit after finishing as the runner-up for the second straight week and the fourth time since joining the Champions Tour.

Defending champion Langer, trying to win the tournament for the third time in four years, wound up with a 67, while Browne, out of Occidental College in Los Angeles, recorded a 66 that included a single bogey on the 14th hole.

Jay Haas posted a 64 to finish four shots back in fifth, while Michael Allen, who beat Waldorf in a playoff last week at the Allianz Championship, shot 67 and tied for sixth with Colin Montgomerie, who had a 69.
