Cameron Tringale of Mission Viejo has played 261 events on the PGA Tour without winning, but has shown at times that he has what it takes.
The 31-year-old Tringale (pictured) shot 6-under-65 and is tied for the lead with Andrew Landry after three rounds of the 49th John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run https://tpc.com/deererun in Silvis, Ill.
“I’ve had a couple of down years, but playing like this proves to me that I belong,” said Tringale, whose only pro victory came in the unofficial Franklin Templeton Shootout in 2014 alongside teammate Jason Day. “I’ve learned that I’m good enough. When I play well, I can play with the best.
“I made a bogey on the first hole today and it would have been easy to get down. I was able to get out of there and birdie the next two, which gave me some momentum. But I took the long view, bounced back, and I will do the same tomorrow.”
Tringale, who opened with 66-66, reeled off five birdies on the front nine after that opening bogey, added two more coming home and finished 54 holes at 16-under 197.
Landry, also 31, whose only victory came in April at the Valero Texas Open, equaled that score by making birdies on three of the first five holes and adding two more late in a 67.
“Some golf courses you can leaderboard watch, but this is not one of them,” said Landry, who also lost in a playoff this year to Jon Rahm in the CareerBuilder Challenge. “You want to stay with your game plan.”
Bill Haas, the 2011 FedEx Cup champion who has not won since 2015 Humana Challenge, birdied four of the last six holes in a bogey-free 64 and is one stroke back in a tie for third with Adam Schenk, who carded a flawless 66.
Nick Watney of Davis and Fresno State had four birdies down the stretch in a 64 and is two shots behind in a tie for fifth with 2016 John Deere champion Ryan Moore, who sank a 17-foot eagle putt on the 17th hole in a 65, Dylan Frittelli of South Africa, who also had a 65, and Vaughn Taylor, who wound up at 66.
Lucas Glover, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, eagled the 10th hole one day after he made a double bogey there and his 69 left him one more down in a tie for ninth with Roger Sloan of Canada, who finished at 67, and Chris Stroud, who came in at 66.
Matthew Wolff of Agoura Hills, who claimed his first PGA Tour victory last week in the 3M Open, shot 67 and is in a tie for 33rd that includes 2014 John Deere winner Brian Harman, who had a 71, and 36-hole leader Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela, who struggled to a 76, while Zach Johnson, the 2012 John Deere champ, totaled 69 and is tied for 56th.
