Tiger Woods, needing a big effort to advance to the FedEx Cup playoffs next week, posted his best score since 2013 when he opened the Wyndham Championship with a 6-under-par 64 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
Woods, who has missed the cut in four of his 10 events on the PGA Tour this season, finished the day four strokes out of the lead in a tie for seventh. He must finish at least second to climb into the top 125 of the point standings to make the field for the playoff opener, the Barclays.
“I felt very good today,” said Woods, who recorded his best score since a 61 en route to his last victory in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational two years ago. “I hit a lot of good iron shots and made some putts … birdie putts and big par putts.
“I finally got something out of my round, instead of going the other way. I put the ball in good spots where I could be aggressive and it was nice to get off to a solid start. I have to keep making birdies because everyone else is going to.”
Woods started on the 10th hole, where he wedged his third shot from 54 yards into the hole for a birdie, then made his only bogey on the next hole. He carded three birdies on the last six holes on the back nine and added three more on the first five holes of the front.
Tiger hit only 7-of-14 greens, but found the green in regulation on 14-of-18 attempts and needed only 25 putts.
