The new year brings new gear

TaylorMade R1 Driver

It’s the start of a new year. And that means its time for equipment manufacturers to start presenting something for every part of the game.

TaylorMade R1 driver: Adjust the loft on TaylorMade’s R1 driver ($399, pictured) from low to high, the face angle from open to closed, and the weights from heavy to light – independently of one another. There are 168 possible combinations, one of which will help you strike the perfect tee shot.

Callaway X Hot irons: Callaway’s X Hot irons ($899 with graphite shafts, $699 with steel) incorporate a deep undercut cavity that lowers the face’s hot spot and a “Speed Frame” clubface that optimizes energy transfer. The result: More distance from across the face.

adidas Golf adizero shoe: The adizero shoe ($180) from adidas Golf weighs just 10.6 ounces and boasts the company’s thinnest-ever outsole. An anatomical last helps maintain comfort while returning energy to each stride. An internal TPU layer adds upper support during lateral movements.

Adams Super S hybrid: The Super S hybrid ($199) from Adams Golf features one slot along the sole behind the thin face that ramps up your ball speed and distance, and another by the crown that boosts the clubface’s trampoline effect at impact to further spring the ball forward at a higher velocity. Perimeter weighting helps you lift shots quickly.

Cleveland Golf 588 Rotex wedge: Need really tight backspin? Cleveland Golf’s 588 Rotex wedge ($120) gets you more of it due to its large U-shaped face grooves that are especially effective from rough, sand and wet grass. Surface roughness milled into the clubface also induces spin.

Volvik Vista iV golf balls: Volvik’s four-piece Vista iV ($47.99 per dozen) offers long distance via a dual core that consists of a soft outer layer and a hard inner core. Offered in orange, yellow, pink and green.

Callaway RAZR Fit Xtreme driver: Callaway’s RAZR Fit Xtreme driver ($399) lets you set the clubface to one of three angles to improve accuracy and trajectory. Adjustable weights allow you to fine-tune ball flight. The lightweight crown ramps up ball speed for long tee shots.
