TaylorMade P-790 Irons

By ED TRAVIS

The most recent addition to TaylorMade’s P-Series of irons is the P-790, the fifth iteration of that model. They feature a hollow body and forged face for those wanting the look of a players iron but with more forgiveness than a standard blade iron.

Walk on the range at any course and many of the golfers with better swings will have a version of the P-790s in their bag. The reason is straightforward; better players get more distance, more stability and more forgiveness with the so-called players iron initially developed by TaylorMade. The secret is to build a slim, good-looking head at address that still has the weighting and internal design to provide help on impacts that aren’t in the center of the face.

The new P-790’s L-shaped face of forged 4340M steel wraps onto the sole and is thinner but 20% stronger than the steel used previously which increased the size of the sweet spot, the amount of face rebound and the potential for more yards.

We think players will like not only the clean look at address but also what may seem like small other points such as the P-790’s increased sole radius and progressive leading edge making for smother turf interaction.

Matt Bovee, Global Category Director – Irons and Wedges said of their latest irons, “P·790 continues to be a special iron that offers something for a wide array of player demographics. Now in their fifth generation, P·790 irons continue to be a global leader in the Players Distance category. In fact, they created the Players Distance category, and this latest generation continues to lead the way.”
