TaylorMade’s MG4 (Milled Grind 4) wedge line has been enhanced from the previous MG3s for increased spin especially in wet conditions with what they are calling “Spin Tread” on the un-plated face accomplished with laser etching between the grooves. They compare it to the action of an automobile tire tread as it reroutes moisture on the road to retain traction.
The slightly darker raw finish of the MG4s helps with glare reduction and will eventually oxidize to help spin generation. The milled sole is somewhat larger than the previous MG3 making for smoother turf contact.
Among the grind options available is a Tiger Woods Grind in the 56° and 60° lofts. Designed for lots of versatility, shots Woods’ is famous for, the 56° has a dual sole with additional relief in the heel and the 60° has a leading edge with extremely high bounce. Weighting to improve the overall feel has been redone by adjusting the shape of the rear of the head.
Greg Cesario of the company’s Wedge Design Team said, “The feel component is a significant factor. By replacing the chrome-plated face with raw finishes early in the Milled Grind evolution, we were able to influence spin and also enhance the overall feel of the wedge. Adding our reconstructed backbar, with more weight positioned directly behind the strike zone, allows us to help players achieve their desired shot trajectories and spin rates with premium feel and confidence.”
