Leo Oyo of San Diego State claimed the individual title by one stroke over Austin Eckroat of Oklahoma State and led the Aztecs to third place in The Prestige on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West www.pgawest.com in La Quinta.
Oyo, a sophomore from Japan who was medalist at the 2018 Bishops Gate Golf Academy Boys Junior Championship and captured the 2016 Innisbrook Christmas Junior, earned his first college victory with a score of 68-68-66—202, 11-under-par, while Eckroat finished second at 72-67-64—203, followed by Spencer Soosman of team champion Texas at 70-69-65—204.
“I finished (77th out of 82 in The Prestige) last year,” Oyo told Golfweek after chipping in for his third eagle of the week on the 16th hole and getting up-and-down for a winning par at No. 18. “I worked pretty hard to get where I am, so this means a lot to me.”
Dan Starzinski of Wyoming posted a score of 71-72-64—207 to tie for fourth with Ollie Osborne of SMU, who finished at 72-67-68—207, while Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine shot 67-72-69—208 to tie for sixth with Daulet Tuleubayev of Stanford, who wound up at 69-70-69—208, Joey Vrzich of Pepperdine, who totaled 66-72-70—208, and Pierceson Coody of Texas, who came in at 70-69-69—208.
Puwit Anupansuebsai of San Diego State carded a score of 75-67-67—209 to tie for 10th with Eddy Lai of UCLA, who shot 69-69-71—209, Markus Braadlie of Texas Tech, who finished at 69-74-66—209 and Noah Goodwin of SMU, who wound up at 67-74-68—209.
Thomas Hutchinson led UC Davis in a tie for 21st 67-71-74—212.
Fourth-ranked Texas claimed the team title at 279-275-278—832, 20-under-par, followed by No. 3 Pepperdine at 275-284-279—838, San Diego State at 287-277-277—841, No. 7 Texas Tech at 278-287-278—843 and Oklahoma State at 291-278-276—845.
SMU was sixth at 286-281-280—847, followed by UCLA at 285-279-285—849, Stanford at 290-281-279—850, Iowa State at 286-288-277—851 and Northwestern at 290-288-280—858.
UC Davis tied for 14th at 285-298-287—870.
