USC Rolls to 22-Shot Victory in Las Vegas

Gabriela Ruffels and Allisen Corpuz of USC finished 1-2 in the individual race, while teammates Alyaa Abdulghany and Amelia Garvey were close behind at 4-5, as the third-ranked Trojans rolled to a 22-stroke victory over Fresno State in the Rebel Beach Intercollegiate at Spanish Trail Country Club https://spanishtrailcc.com in Las Vegas.

USC claimed its first victory of the season after five straight top-10 finishes, posting a winning score of 284-274-281—839, 25-under-par, while Fresno State finished 286-286-289—861, and New Mexico was third at 296-294-293—883, followed by Brigham Young at 289-297-299—885 and Long Beach State at 304-291-291—886.

“It was a great team effort and a strong follow-up to our second-place finish last week at Northrop,” said Coach Justin Silverstein, who is in his second season at the helm for the Trojans.

“Thrilled to see Gabriela get her first win this season and Allisen Corpuz battled her to the final hole. Having Alyaa Abdulghany and Amelia Garvey also finish in the top five was a testament to the excellent all-around work the team put in.”

Colorado was sixth at 301-295-293—889, followed by Gonzaga at 304-292-296—892, Nevada at 297-298-298—893, host UNLV at 295-299-304—898 and UC Irvine at 300-295-305—900.

Ruffels, a junior from Australia, carded a score of 68-68-71—207, followed by Corpuz at 71-69-69—209, Brigitte Thibault of Fresno State at 70-71-69—210, Abdulghany at 72-67-72—211 and Garvey at 73-70-69—212.

“I was happy to get the win today,” said Ruffels, who last year captured the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship and the North and South Amateur Championship. “I played super solid all week and knew I just had to stay steady today, which I was able to do, so I’m really happy.

“I’m also very happy for the team to get our first win of the season today.”

Samantha Fuller of UNLV was sixth at 72-72-70—214, while Harriet Lynch of Fresno State shot 71-73-71—215 to tie for seventh with Kamie Hamada of New Mexico, who finished at 71-71-73—215, and Napat Lertsadwattana of New Mexico was ninth at 71-72-73—216, followed by Annick Haczkiewicz of Brigham Young at 72-72-73—217.

Hannah Ko led Long Beach State in a tie for 11th at 75-76-67—218 and Sienna Lyford of UC Irvine tied for 16th at 74-73-73—220.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion USC were Malia Nam in a tie for 16th at 74-70-76—220, and Aiko Leong in a tie for 20th at 76-73-72—221.
