Mark Rolfing, on-course analyst for NBC and the Golf Channel, announced that he has been diagnosed with a rare form of salivary gland cancer and will miss the rest of the golf season.
The 66-year-old Rolfing underwent surgery on Aug. 13 to remove a malignant growth from his left cheek area and will soon to begin a second phase of treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
“Debi (his wife) and I would like to thank everyone for their incredible support and well-wishes, which have been incredibly valuable,” Rolfing said in a statement.
“My doctors and I are confident that by the end of the next phase of treatment, this cancer will be cured. I fully intend to rejoin my NBC/Golf Channel team at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua in January, and can’t wait.”
Rolfing, who began his career as a commentator in 1985 and has been with NBC since 1987, played professional golf around the world in 1975-76 before doing to work with the Kapalua Resort on Maui.
The Rolfings live on the Bay Course at Kapalua, and the Mark and Debi Rolfing Charitable Foundation has raised thousands of dollars for causes in the islands.
