Jackson Rivera of Rancho Santa Fe made a birdie on the third playoff hole to turn back Jack Smyth of Tustin to win the 18th Rancho Santa Margarita Amateur in rainy, windy conditions at Tijeras Creek Golf Club www.tijerascreek.com in Rancho Santa Margarita.
Rivera, who finished third in the tournament in 2018 and has committed to USC, came from four strokes behind in the final round and forced the playoff with a score of 73-70—143, 1-under-par, while Smith wound up at 70-73—143.
Rivera, who has committed to Cal State Fullerton, three-putted from 40 feet with a chance to win on the final hole of regulation.
Connor O’Brien of Irvine was third at 71-73—144, followed by Jaden Cantario of Tustin at 75-70—145, while Tyler See of Goleta posted a score of 79-67—146 to tie for fifth with Dan Sullivan of Pasadena, who shot 74-72—146, and first-round leader Will Stribling of Santa Ana, who wound up at 69-77—146.
Joey Davis of Lake Forest totaled 77-70—147 to tie for eighth with Yaoting Zou of Irvine, who finished at 71-76—147, and Benjamin Wong of Brea, who came in at 72-75—147.
