Residents File 9,660 Signatures to Save Newport Beach Golf Course, Forcing Citywide Vote on Wave Pool Project

Newport Beach, CA — In a significant grassroots victory, a coalition of Newport Beach residents has submitted 9,660 petition signatures to challenge the city council’s approval of a proposed Wave Pool development on the Newport Beach Golf Course. The total exceeds the required threshold by 57%, triggering the process for a citywide vote.

A True Community Effort

The referendum campaign was launched just 30 days ago, fueled entirely by volunteers from across the community — golfers, small businesses, veterans, surfers, environmental advocates, and longtime residents. Despite heavy rain, Thanksgiving weekend, and attempts by individuals to disrupt the petition drive, the group pushed forward and surpassed expectations.

A team of organizers including Bill Finster, Benny Hallock, Steve Vickers, Cash Weston, Tonya Sumner, and Chris Karalis filed the signed petitions with the city, marking a major milestone in efforts to preserve the long-standing public golf course.

Why Residents Took Action

Community members expressed deep concerns about the city’s approval of the Wave Pool project, calling it financially speculative and out of step with Newport Beach’s values. Supporters say the golf course serves thousands of locals — including seniors, youth programs, veterans, and everyday golfers who rely on its accessibility and affordability.

“We’re neighbors, not developers,” organizers shared. “This project should never have been approved without the people having a say. Today, the community made its voice heard.”

What Happens Next

With the petitions submitted, the Orange County Registrar of Voters will verify the signatures. If validated, the City of Newport Beach must choose one of two options:

  1. Repeal its approval of the Wave Pool project, or
  2. Place the issue on a future ballot, allowing voters to decide.

Either outcome represents a significant step toward preserving the golf course.

The Fight Continues

More than 145 donors have supported the effort so far. The coalition will continue raising awareness and funds to ensure residents remain informed as the process moves forward.
