Philpott Wins PWGA-Helen Lengfeld Memorial

Vicki Philpott of LPGA Amateurs Sacramento captured the Pacific Women’s Golf Association-Helen Lengfeld Memorial Tournament by six strokes over defending champion Connie Huckaba, Tomi Marcus and Cheryl Wecker at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister and Pajaro Oaks Golf Club in Royal Oaks.

Philpott posted a score of 82-78—160, 17-over par, while Huckaba, of McCloud Women’s Golf Club, shot 86-80—166, Marcus, of San Juan Oaks Ladies Golf Club, finished at 85-81—166 and Wecker, of Rancho Women’s Golf Club, wound up at 84-82—186.

Diane Sanderson of Rancho Women’s Golf Club posted a score of 90-84—174 to tie for sixth with Sheila Lee of Foon Hay Senior Golf Club, who totaled 91-83—174, and Kay Robinson of Healdsburg Women’s Golf Club, who came in at 87-87—174.

Kathy Herrero of Stonetree Golf Club was eighth at 91-84—175, followed by Linda Steiner of Eagle Springs Women’s Golf Club at 86-92—178 and Kellene Reinschell of Micke Grove Women’s Golf Club at 91-88—179.

Linda Fitzmaurice of Lincoln Hills Ladies Golf Club won the Low Net Division with a score of 69-64—133, while Philpott finished at 71-69—140 to tie for second with Colleen Hall-Werstler of Cinnabar Women’s Golf Club, who wound up at 73-67—140, and Steiner, who totaled 66-74—140.

Lee shot 74-67—141 to tie for fifth with Reinschelle, who finished at 71-70—141, while Sanderson finished at 75-71—146 to tie for seventh with Jeanne Lambson of Whitney Oaks Women’s Golf Club, who totaled 76-70—146, and Kathy Schwamb of Sherwood Forest Women’s Golf Club, who came in at 72-74—146.

Nancy Boggs of Manteca Women’s Golf Club was 10th at 75-72—147.

The tournament is named for Helen Lengfeld, a women’s golf icon in the last century who founded the Pacific Women’s Golf Association in 1947. The PWGA has 200-plus member clubs and almost 10,000 individual members today.
