Occidental Captures the Cal Lutheran Invitational by One Stroke Over LaVerne

Occidental College captured the team championship by one stroke over LaVerne and Cortland Benner of Whittier took home the individual title in the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen Invitational at Moorpark Golf Club. 

The Tigers, who were 2-0 in dual meets during the Fall under Coach Will Morris, claimed their first tournament title of the season after finishing in the top 10 three times by posting a score of 303-295—598, 22-over-par, while LaVerne was second at 302-297—599, followed by Pomona-Pitzer at 308-296—604, Whittier at 307-299—606, and host Cal Lutheran at 311-299—610. 

Whitman was sixth a 313-303—616, followed by Claremont Mudd Scripps at 302-315—617, Marymount at 320-303—623 and Linfield University at 327-314—641. 

Benner, a Whittier freshman from Bend, Ore., earned the first victory of his college career with a score of 70-70—140, 4-under, followed by Michael Ordona of LaVerne at 73-69—142, Vikram Chatterjee of Claremont Mudd Scripps at 72-72—144, Jack Moeller of Occidental at 72-73—145 and Adam Elshamy of Occidental at 74-72—146. 

JP Guimaraes of Cal Lutheran shot 73-74—147 to tie for sixth with Yuki Bannai of Pomona-Pitzer, while finished at 75-72—147, while Edward Wu Claremont Mudd Scripps was eighth at 73-75—148, followed by Jot Singh of Cal Lutheran at totaled 76 73—149, and David Wong of Pomona Pitzer wound up at 75-75–150 to tie for 10th with Kyle Hazlett of LaVerne, who came in at 77-73—150. 

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Occidental were Connor Wierman in a tie for 12th at 78-73—151, Max Malakoff in a tie for 25th at 79 77—156, and Joshua Wong in a tie for 51st at 80-89—169.
