Norton Wins Patriot All-America Classic

Noah Norton of Chico rode a birdie streak early on the back nine to a one-stroke victory over three other golfers in the Patriot All-America Golf Classic on the Gold Course at Wigwam Golf Resort https://wigwamarizona.com in Litchfield, Park, Ariz.

Norton, a junior at Georgia Tech, collected birdies on the 10th, 12th and 13th holes before finishing with five pars to post a winning score of 70-65-68—203, 7-under-par.

“I had a good round yesterday to put me in a (good) position, which is what I was hoping for,” said Norton, who captured the Northern Section CIF Championship three times while playing at Pleasant Valley High in Chico, Calif.

“Didn’t really have my best front nine (in the final round) and hung in there, it wasn’t playing easy, then I got hot on holes 10-to-13 with three birdies. Coming down the stretch I didn’t hit the best of shots, but I grinded it out, committed well, and was able to pull it out in the end.”

Norton, who started the day in a three-way tie for the lead, played in honor of Army Sgt. Michael S. Curry, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2007. He was presented with an Air Force style trophy, bomber jacket and an American Flag that was flown both in an F-16 Fighting Falcon & F-35 Lightning II.

Norton also received a sponsor’s exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour’s Wichita Open on June 20-23 at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kan.

Sam Choi of Anaheim and University of New Mexico shot 69-69-67—204 to tie for second with Mason Overstreek of Kingfisher, Okla., and University of Arkansas, who finished at 69-67-68—204, and Jackson Suber of Tampa, Fla., and University of Mississippi, who wound up at 68-68-68—204.

Choi was tied for the lead with Norton and could have forced a playoff, but he closed with a bogey.

Joey Vrzich of El Cajon and Pepperdine carded a score of 69-71-65—205 to tie for fifth with David Perkins of East Peoria, Ill., and Illinois State, who totaled 64-71-70—205, while Mason Anderson of Chandler, Ariz., and Arizona State was seventh at 67-68-71—206.

Palmer Jackson of Murrysville, Pa., and Notre Dame shot 71-71-65—207 to tie for eighth with Zack Taylor of Pittsburgh and Coastal Carolina, who finished at 70-71-66—207, while Jimmy Lee of Mission, Texas, and Texas A&M wound up at 71-70-67—208 to tie for 10th with Reid Davenport of Austin, Texas, and Vanderbilt, who came in at 69-69-70—208.
