Muzi Wins SCGA Women’s Match Play

Katherine Muzi of Newport Beach pulled away from USC teammate Brianna Navarossa of San Diego to win the Southern California Golf Association Women’s Match Play Championship, 3 and 2, at Mission Viejo Country Club.

Muzi, who will be a senior for the Trojans, was 2 down to Navarro’s, a sophomore, through 10 holes, but rallied by winning the 11th with a birdie before taking charge by winning holes 13 through 16, closing things out with an eight-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Navarrese won the first hole with a birdie and never trailed in the match until the 14th hole, when Music simply ran her over. In fact, Navarro’s had not trailed since the sixth hole of the quarterfinals, when she took that match over by winning five of the next six holes.

In the semifinals, Mmusi defeated Vanessa Wang of Rowland Heights, also by 3 and 2, while Navarrese, the 2019 Canadian Women’s Open champion, defeated Hannah Jucar of Chula Vista, 2 up.

music, who captured the 2020 Golfweek Moorpark Amateur Championship, also defeated Maria Lonza Ortiz in the first round, 3 and 2, followed by a 3-and-1 victory over Caroline Cantlay of Los Alamitos in round two.

Navarro’s routed Wendy Ohlmeyer of Adera Ranch, 8 and 7, in round one and defeated Kate Villegas of Arcadia in the quarterfinals, 4 and 3.
