William Mouw of Chino was selected 2019 Men’s Player of the Year, and Amari Avery of Riverside was chosen Women’s Player of the Year by the Southern California Golf Association.
The 18-year-old Mouw, a freshman at Pepperdine from Ontario Christian High, captured the 2019 California Amateur Championship—becoming one of the youngest players to claim that title—and also won the 2019 Thunderbird Invitational and the 2019 Heather Farr Classic.
Mouw, a two-time Rolex All-American, was top-ranked by the American Junior Golf Association four several weeks in 2017 and has been ranked as high as No. 21 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He had three Toyota Tour Cup victories during his junior days.
In addition, Mouw won the 2017 Western Junior Championship and finished first in the 13-14 year-old Division in the 2015 Junior World Championships.
Mouw claimed the 2018 CIF Southern Section Championship, tied for third in the 2019 CIF State Championship while at Ontario Christian, and was named Cal-Hi Sports Division 5 Athlete of the Year for all sports in 2018-19.
Avery, 15, is the youngest-ever SCGA Women’s Player of the Year, after she won the 2019 California Women’s Amateur Championship, the 2019 SCGA Women’s Match Play runner-up and was a semifinalist at the 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
In addition, the home-schooled Avery had eight other top-10 finishes this year after claiming 19 Southern California Junior Tour titles from 2012 to 2017, including 11 in 2014.
