Maverick McNealy of Stanford claimed medalist honors for the fourth time this season, leading the host Cardinal to third place in The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto.
McNealy, a sophomore from Portola Valley, came from three strokes behind in the final round to finish with a score of 67-64-66–197, 13-under-par, and tie Will Cannon of Alabama-Birmingham, who wound up at 66-62-69–197.
The title went to McNealy, who leads the nation with his four victories this season, in a scorecard playoff.
“Maverick continues to lead us with an amazing win on his home course,” said Conrad Ray, Stanford’s Director of Men’s Golf. “It was something special. It was extra special to have (former) Coach (Wally) Goodwin here to give Maverick the winner’s jacket of his namesake tournament.
“Everyone at Stanford appreciates what Coach Goodwin has done for the golf program and university.”
Bryson DeChambeau of SMU, the 2010 California State Junior champion from Clovis, was third at 67-66-65–198, followed by John Oda of UNLV at 64-64-71–199, and Austin Smotherman of SMU at 70-70-62–202.
David Boote of Stanford tied for sixth at 67-69-67–203, while Jonathan De Los Reyes of St. Mary’s shot 67-68-69–204 and finished in a tie for ninth that included Cody Blick of San Jose State, who came in at 66-66-72–204.
Connor Campbell of Loyola Marymount carded a score of 71-69-65–205 and tied for 12th with Jeffrey Swegle of Stanford, who totaled 73-65-67–205, while Cody McManus of Pepperdine tied for 14th at 67-72-67–206, and Bobby Gojuangco of USC finished at 72-72-65–209 to tie for 20th with Tyler Kertson of Santa Clara, who came in at 71-70-68–209.
Seb Crookall Nixon of San Francisco shot 65-72-73–210 and wound up in a tie for 24th that included Rico Hoey of USC, who finished at 75-68-67–210, Mike Brockington of UC Davis, who totaled 67-69-74–210, and Eric Sugimoto of USC, who posted a score of 70-66-74–210.
Alabama-Birmingham recorded a score of 272-269-276–817, 23-under-par, and tied atop the leaderboard with SMU, which wound up at 279-268-270–817, but the Blazers took home the trophy by way of the applied tiebreaker.
Stanford was third at 276-275-272–823, followed by Texas Christian at 264-285-275–824, and UNLV totaled 274-271-281–826 to tie for fifth with Oregon, which came in at 280-275-271–826.
“I’m happy the guys made a run in the team competition,” Ray said. “The course played difficult, with some firmer greens and longer rough.”
St. Mary’s was seventh at 277-285-281–843, followed by USC at 290-277-277–844 and UC Davis at 274-278-293–845
Pepperdine was 11th at 281-286-284–851, followed by Santa Clara at 281-280-292–853, and Loyola Marymount at 282-292-282–856.
San Jose State tied for 14th at 278-290-290–858 and San Francisco finished 18th at 290-292-289–871.
