McCarthy, Waves Sweep Pasadera Invitational

Joshua McCarthy of Pepperdine claimed the individual title in a playoff with teammate Dylan Menante and led the top-ranked Waves to a 28-stroke victory over arch-rival Loyola Marymount in the season-opening Pasadera Collegiate Invitational at the Club at Pasadera in Monterey.

McCarthy, a senior from Danville, claimed his first college victory with a birdie on the first playoff hole after posting a score of 64-68-64—196, 14-under-par, while Menantne, a sophomore Carlsbad, finished at 62-65-69—196, as the Waves finished in the top five spots in the individual standings.

Joey Vrzich of Pepperdine shot 65-67-67—199 to tie for third with teammate Joe Highsmith, while Caden Fiorini of the Waves shot 67-66-67—200 to tie for fifth with Riley Lewis of Loyola Marymount, who finished at 66-65-69—70—200.

Derek Hitchner of Pepperdine totaled 67-67-68—202 to tie for Andi Xi of the University of San Diego, who wound up at 66-68-68—202, and William Mouw of Pepperdine, who came in at 68-66-68—202, while Caden McMackin of Loyola Marymount was 10th at 68-44-71—203.

Ethan Ashbrook led St. Mary’s in a tie for 13th at 66-65-75—206, while Carson Lundell tied for 15th at 67-70-70—207.

Pepperdine finished at 265-264-265—794, 46-under-par, missing the school record for low score in a 54-hole event by six strokes.

Loyola Marymount totaled 267-278-277—822, while San Diego was third at 281-269-277—827, followed by St. Mary’s at 273-272-284–829 and Brigham Young at 276-287- 279—842.

The 28-stroke margin of victory tied for the third-largest in Pepperdine history.
