Michael McCabe of Moorpark led virtually wire-to-wire and captured the 118th California State Open by a whopping nine strokes over Jeff Hart of Solana Beach at Industry Hills Golf Club at Indian Palms in the City of Industry.
The 33-year-old McCabe, the 2013 Monterey Open champion who played college golf at Portland, carded birdies on four of the last eight holes and finished at 65-67-66–198, 17-under par, to collect $8,000, while Hart wound up at 67-72-68–207.
Head pro Michael Block of Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club shot 68-71-69–208 to tie for third with Ben Briscoe of San Clemente, who totaled 69-68-71–208, and Kenny Pigman of Mira Loma, who finished at 67-67-74–208.
Andre De Decker of Menlo Park wound up at 72-69-69–210 to tie for sixth with Jeff Gove of LaQuinta, who posted a score of 70-70-70–210, Alex Franklin of San Rafael, who totaled 68-71-71–210, and Mitchell Fedorka of Upland, who came in at 68-71-71–210.
Garrett Sapp of Whittier shot 71-70-70–211 to tie for 10th with Frank Svanberg of Switzerland, who finished at 69-72-70–211, and Ryan Carter of Hacienda Heights, who wound up at 68-72-71–211.
Byron Busse of La Habra claimed low-amateur honors in a tie for 43rd at 73-73-71–217.
