Mahan misses the cut in Germany

Hunter Mahan failed to climb into the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings after the BMW Championship and missed the Tour Championship this week at East Lake in Atlanta for the first time since the PGA Tour went to its playoff system in 2007.

In fact, Mahan missed a playoff event for the first time, ending a streak of playing in 35 in a row — more than any player.

So he decided to fly off the play in the Porsche European Open this week at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach in Germany, playing in a European Tour event for the first time since 2012.

Mahan, who grew up in Orange and attended USC for one year until transferring to Oklahoma State, got off to a terrific start with a 5-under-par 66, but then struggled to a 76 with a triple bogey 8 on the 12th hole and a double bogey 5 on the fourth hole to miss the cut by two strokes.

A six-time winner on the PGA Tour, Hahan’s next scheduled event is the Frys.Com Open, which will open the 2015-16 PGA Tour season at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., on Oct. 15-18.
